Pretty sure you all are tuning in (or not, since MTV has lost a lot of its luster in the past, oh I dunno, 15 years), but in case you missed it, Kanye West was up to his usual shenanigans at the MTV Video Music Awards (or “VMAs”). As Taylor Swift was delivering her acceptance speech for the “Best Female Video” award, Kanye West ran out onto the stage and took her microphone to give props to Beyonce, who was also nominated in the category. Taylor Swift stood stunned and bewildered by the incident, and what came next was even more…bewildering.
“Taylor, I’m really happy for you. And I’ll let you finish,” West said to Swift. “But Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!” A smattering of boos turned into a chorus of boos from the crowd, and after West stormed off the stage, a speechless Taylor Swift was escorted off the stage. This all went down minutes before Swift was to perform live. The camera panned to show Beyonce’s reaction, which appeared to be one of either shock or flattery - most likely a little of both.
Kanye West is respected as one of the most innovative minds in not only hip-hop but contemporary pop music as well, though outbursts like these certainly do not help his image, and further his reputation as arrogant and immature. Despite this incident, Taylor Swift went on to perform live about half an hour later, showing no ill effects from what transpired earlier in the night.
Never a dull moment at the MTV Video Music Awards. Another interesting thing of note are the commercials that have been airing during the big show - the Beatles Rock Band game, commercials for the new Twilight movie, etc. - this is sure to be an interesting Holiday season, to say the least.
