As you might have expected, Microsoft has decided to reduce the price of their popular game console the Xbox 360 Elite. This comes as no surprise after the announcement last week that Sony’s new PS3 Slim is going to hit the market at the low price of $299. So, what does Microsoft do when faced with a challenge like this? They price their console at exactly the same cost of $299! That’s a $100 reduction from the previous price point of $399, but it is not likely to be enough.
The Xbox 360 is not on the same technological level as the PS3 in terms of hardware capabilities, and the Nintendo Wii has won over the market of “non-gamers” because of its allure to casual and price sensitive consumers (it costs $249). It is very likely that Microsoft will continue reducing the price point of the Xbox throughout the year in preparation for the launch of its new Natal model which is rumored to drop in 2010/2011 at about $299. This would allow them to have a more competitive machine at the higher price level, while still competing with the more casual gamers in the lower price levels.
However, the question still remains—which is better? For my money I would prefer the PS3 any day. I love the Blueray player in the console and have always been a fan of Sony controls compared to Microsoft’s. Not only is the control less clunky and a little sleeker, but it’s simply easier to handle and more user friendly with easier to reach more intuitive button placement. I do have some friends that are die hard Xbox enthusiasts, but I think that position is even harder to defend now that Sony is launching the Slim at this affordable price point.
